Verb Forms with Phraseological Value

Verb Forms with Phraseological Value

Poghosyan Albert

Summary

Key words: phraseologism, metaphor, subjunctive mood, past participle, suppositional mood, pronominal use, direct meaning

In this article, the research material is separate non-finite and finite verb forms, which in certain cases can acquire phraseological meaning. In modern Armenian, such words are rare; their number does not exceed two or three dozen. Perhaps this is why they have escaped the attention of researchers. It should be emphasized that such use of phraseological units should not be confused with a metaphor, since individual verbs acquire phraseological value not in all forms, but only in certain separate non-finite or finite forms.

Phraseology has repeatedly become an object of research for Armenian linguists, but the opinions of researchers regarding the minimum number of components of phraseological units differ. These opinions can be conditionally divided into three groups:

  1. Phraseological units must consist of at least two components.
  2. The issue of the minimum number of components of phraseological units remains insufficiently studied.
  3. Individual words can also be considered as phraseological units.
