Summary
Key words: time and literature, genocide, Artsakh claims, character system, artistic chronicle
The novel “Archi” by Hovhannes Yeranyan reflects on the Armenian reality over the last century, encompassing the artistic chronicle of the genocide and the recent developments of the Artsakh war, which serve as the framework for the two narrative threads of the novel.
There are three Archis in the novel: a victorious, but elderly one, a defeated one, and a double-natured. The novel concludes with this last character. The title of the novel suggests the roles of these three, and perhaps the last one is the most important. Is Duality the Future of Tomorrow? Isn’t this one of the problems of globalization, which raises so many questions when the real facts most often do not speak in favor of our kind? The novel reminds us once again of the author’s insatiable interest in the reality and the immediate application of the cases derived from that reality in his narrative. The memory of the Artsakh war, the blockade and famine is relatively fresh, which also became the subject of the depiction. Perhaps the most important merit of the novel is the desire and effort to exclude despair and defeat.
