In contemporary times, significant changes are occurring across all areas of state and social life, leading to the transformation and deformation of value systems. This necessitates new approaches to shaping the moral character of the younger generation. This article explores the relationship between the personality of a teacher and the development of students’ value orientations. Through an analysis of foundational sources on axiology and educational theories, a framework of essential moral qualities for teachers has been developed. Survey data from teachers and students reveal that respondents have a limited understanding of the moral model of the modern teacher. This gap could negatively influence the formation of students’ value orientations and needs to be filled, so, the article proposes several solutions to this issue. The system of value orientations is not given once and for all: with changes in living conditions, the personality itself, new values appear, and sometimes their full or partial revaluation occurs. The value orientations of students, as the most dynamic part of Russian society, are the first to undergo changes caused by various processes occurring in the life of the country.
