IRREGUALAR STRESS IN ARMENIAN

Aren Santoyan, Hasmik Harutyunyan

Key words: stress shift, meaning-differentiating stress, stress in abbreviations, stress in negative formations, stress on the vowelը” [ə], double stress

In modern Armenian linguistics, stress is generally described as strong, non-meaning- differentiating, stable-mobile, and typically placed on the final syllable. However, this rule is frequently disrupted by various linguistic expressions, which are often either overlooked in existing research or serve to complement, clarify, or expand upon different perspectives.

This article explores cases where stress diverges from the aforementioned established norms, identifying the following irregular patterns:

  1. Unconventional stress patterns in word formation;
  2. Irregular accentuation in grammatical inflections;
  3. Stress characteristics of the vowel “ը”;
  4. Stress anomalies in accent loss and part-of-speech shifts;
  5. Stress anomalies caused by the meaning-differentiating role of stress;
  6. Double accentuation;
  7. Stress patterns in abbreviations;
  8. Characteristics of logical stress.
