DISCONTINUITY IN MULTI-COMPONENT VERBAL PHRASAL UNITS
Albert Poghosyan
Key words: one-word, polyword, classification by quantity, classification by syntactic relations, being a member of a sentence, not being a member of a sentence
Discontinuity has never become a subject of study by Armenian linguists. The issue of discontinuity of verbal phrasal units has been addressed by a few researchers, but only superficially.
In this article we study multicomponent verbal phrasal units (consisting of four or more components) based on two principles: by quantitative criteria and by syntactic correlation.
Multi-component verbal phrasal units are often found with one discontinuous unit. It can be either one-word or polyword which most often act as a member of a sentence, although it may not have such a function. Discontinuous units in speech can serve as the principal and secondary members of a sentence.
Multi-component verbal phrasal units with two discontinuous units are rare. In such a situation, they can also be one-word or polyword, act or not act as a member of a sentence.
