The article presents observations on the development of dialogue, which, as a type of discourse, occupies a central place due to many shared characteristics. Dialogue, as a form of communication and a means of cognition, has evolved alongside human society. Its main functions – information transmission and the communication of emotional values – have jointly shaped its semantic role. Special attention is given to the practical significance of dialogue’s communicative-pragmatic functions, which influence human thinking and modify its form. The study examines informational, cognitive, mental, and expressive aspects of dialogue to reveal underlying layers of text and context. Discourse is analyzed alongside dialogue as a semantic phenomenon closely linked to social communication. The research also provides a brief historical overview of dialogue and discourse and presents the perspectives of leading theorists, addressing both substantive and operational aspects of the topic. This comprehensive approach highlights the centrality of dialogue in human interaction, cognition, and communication, emphasizing its evolving role in understanding language, thought, and social context.
