Gourgen Khachatryan was born on 1st of February, 1953, to a teachers’ family in the village of Jiliza, Lori Region.

In 1970 he finished Chochkan village secondary school with honors.

From 1970 to 1971 worked at an 8-year school in the town of Karkop, Lori Region.

From 1971 to 1973 served in the Soviet army.

From 1973 to 1977 he studied at the Philologiacal Faculty of Vanadzor State Pedagogical Institute named after Hovh. Tumanyan.

From 1977 to 1981 he taught Armenian Language and Literature at Vanadzor School N1, from 1980 to 1981 assuming the position of vice-director of educational activities.

From 1982 to 1984 he studied at the PhD course of the RA National Academy “Hrachya Acharyan” University (specialization History of the Armenian language).

In 1985 he was assigned to work as a junior researcher at the same institute.

In 1986 he defended his thesis on the theme of “Verbal Simple Sentences in Grabar (V c.)” receiving the degree of a Doctor of Philology.

Since 1986 he has been teaching at the Department of the Armenian Language of Vanadzor State Pedagogical Institute named after Hovh. Tumanyan. First he occupied the position of a lecturer, then that of an associate professor. At present he is a Professor.

Parallel with the work of Professor

From 1987 to 1988 was the educational administrator of the same institute.

In 1993 he was awarded the title of associate professor in the Department of the Armenian Language.

In 1995 he was elected to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philology, where he worked until 2006.

In 2000 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme of “The Valency of the Analytical Verbs in Grabar”, receiving a Ph.D. degree.

In 2005 he was awarded the academic title of Professor of Linguistics.

Since 2006 to present has been the Rector of the Vanadzor State Pedagogical Institute.

He has authored and  co-authored eight monographs and about seventy scholarly articles.

In 2004 he was awarded “Acknowledgement” by the prime Minister of RA.

In 2008 he was awarded a “Movses Khorenatsi” medal by the President of RA.

In 2010 was awarded a medal by the Prime Minister of RA.

Since 2011 has been a member of the Professional Council of RA Ministry of Education and Science NAS H. Acharian Language University 019 specialization.

In 2012 he was elected as a member of the Writers' Union of Armenia.

Since 1998 has been a member of the Republican Party of Armenia.

Mr. Khachatryan is married, and has a son.

Alongside with science, he also has a love of nature.

Since 2006 has been a member of “The Armenian Association of Hunters and Fishermen”, and deals with fishing.

His over seventy articles and the following books have been published:

His work “Gregory of Narek, Nicean Creed ("Book of Lamentations", Chapter 75), Eastern Armenian translation, introduction and notes by Gourgen Khachatryan , Yerevan 2003, was published in a separate booklet.
