The faculty was founded in 1969. Until 1955 it was called Faculty of Linguistics, (1977-1988 –Faculty of History and Linguistics) and since 1995 - Faculty of Philology.

Currently 334 students study their BA programme in full-time learning system of the Faculty, 33 students study in the 1and 2 years of MA programme. 199 students study BA programme in 1-5 years of distance learning system, and 6 - MA programme. In 2008-2009 academic year admission was held to MA programme for the specialty of Armenian Language and Literature. Since 2009-2010 academic year the admission has been held in departments of ’Russian Language and Literature’ and ’English Language and Literature.’ Admission to distance learning MA programme is held only for “Armenian Language and Literature”. From 2014-2015 academic year the admission to all the specialties of the faculty is held only on university education programme.

Students of different departments of the faculty actively participate in republic and regional competitions and return with prizes.

The Chairs of Armenian Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, where prominent scientists of Armenia (doctors and candidates of sciences) work, provide courses to the Faculty of Philology. It is a tradition in the Faculty to organize annual “Toumanyan readings”, and also significant research is carried out in cooperation with the museums of Hovh. Toumanyan and Stepan Zouryan, which is aimed at composing the concordances and bibliography of their works. In 2007 an auditorium named after Hrant Dink opened at the Department of Journalism. 

The dean of the Philological Faculty is Albert Poghosyan, born on September 3, 1957, Tehran, Iran. In 1983 he graduated from Kirovakan State Pedagogical Institute, Faculty of Philology. Candidate of Philological Sciences (2002), Associate Professor (2006). Instructs courses “Old Armenian”, “Modern Armenian (Phraseology and Dictionary Science)”, “Introduction to Western Armenian”.
