The Chair of Informatics and Applied Sciences was founded in 1994 (by the resolution of Scientific Council, on the first of June, in 1994), and later, in 2003, it was renamed the Chair of Informatics and Economical-Mathematical Methods and Modeling by the academic council of the university.

Vahram Badgdasaryan, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor, has been the head of the chair from the day of its establishment. 15 lecturers work in the chair, among them 1 Doctor, 5 Associate Professors, 6 Candidates of Sciences, and lecturers with long-term working experience.

The foundation of the chair was preconditioned by the need for further implementation of the country’s strategic course of compulsory literacy, and for which it was created sufficient basis in the university. In 1982, on the initiative of S. Mergelyan, an outstanding mathematician and academician, it was opened the process of preparation of specialists in “Applied Mathematics” and it operated successfully till 1989. More than 80% of its graduates have replenished the growing requirements to develop and invest Computational Mathematics, Informatics and Management Automated Control Systems in national economy of Lori Region and nowadays, they work in different fields of the introduction of Information Technologies.

In 1989 the educational and methodological cabinet of the Ministry published the manual called “Basics of Informatics and Computer Engineering” in 1000 copies, under the authority of V. Hovsepyan, who is one of the lecturers of the chair. The foundation of the chair contributed to the expansion of the work done on the teaching of Information Technologies and Computer Engineering in the university and raised it to a new qualitative level. Over the last 15 years the chair has been supplemented by new specialists, the workload of the chair has grown rapidly, and the list of subjects offered by the chair has expanded. The 2 laboratories of the chair are equipped with modern computer technologies, which give students the opportunity to conduct trainings in e-learning and laboratory studies on modern software packages. In 2008 the computer center after S. Mergelyan was put into operation (with more than 50 computers), where students of all faculties of the university have their seminars on Informatics.

The staff of the chair carries out research on mathematic modeling of various sociological phenomena, creating automated learning systems, developing numerical and optimization methods and studying their characteristics by applying computer technologies, as well as developing and investing applied software packages. The students’ participation in such activities are mainly carried out within the frameworks of term papers, diploma projects and theses.

In 2003, at the end of October, the head of the chair Vahram Baghdasaryan defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Emigration and its Socio-economic Consequences in the Republic of Armenia” at the meeting of the Scientific Council of the University of Economics in Yerevan, and was awarded with the degree of Doctor of Economic Sciences by the Scientific Council, and in 2006 he was awarded with the degree of Professor.

In 2008 lecturer of the chair Gayane Kanaryan has defended her thesis and was awarded with the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

In 2011 lecturer of the chair Suren Eksuzyan defended his thesis entitled “Modeling of the Cutting Issues and their Application in Technological Processes”.

In 2011 lecturer of the chair N. Khublaryan defended her dissertation on “Research and Development of E-learning Systems”.

The lecturers of the chair participate in international conferences. The chair, with its developments in the sphere of IT (information technologies), has participated in regional and urbane exhibitions, especially the exhibition called “LORI PROD EXPO”.

The chair delivers courses to all the faculties of the university and teaches more than 45 subjects, among them Informatics; Computer Skills; ECM Software Support; Discrete Mathematics; Calculation Methods and its Practice; Mathematical Modeling; Mathematical Modeling and Digital Methods; Methods of Teaching Mathematics; Programming Languages; Modern Programming Languages; Digital Methods and Computational Experiment; Research into Actions; Theory of Algorithms; Basics of Artificial Intelligence; Data Structure and Database; ECM Architecture; Optimization Methods; Intellectual Systems; Information Networks and Internet; Computer Networks; Internet and Multimedia; Information and Communication Technologies; Computer Graphics; Computer and Course Paper Techniques in Translation; Applied Software Package; Combinatorial Algorithms; Application of Computer Technologies in Educational Process; Economic and Mathematical Models; Modeling and Automation of Physical Process and Sciences; Information Systems; Information Technologies in Economics; IT Technologies in the Sphere of Investigation; Computer Solution of Applied Issues; Mathematical Logics and Theory of Algorithms; Applied Software Packages; Computer Experiments in Physics; Geological Informatics; Testing and Qualifying Software Systems; Modern Electronic Methods and Means of Teaching Management and Assessment; Special Chapters of the Theory of Functions; Contemporary Issues of the Profession; Basics of Information Technologies.

The main spheres of the research conducted by the chair are the followings: development of various thematic and subject oriented automated educational systems; mathematical and computer modeling of various biological, physical, chemical and economic processes; development of optimization methods; computer modeling of the approximate methods of solving differential equations and variation problems and optimization processes and acquiring comparative assessment of their effectiveness; studying the combinatory of 1-account fixed point and development of the appropriate algorithms and getting comparative marks with the help of computer modeling; mathematical modeling of migration processes; sociology research and development of automated monitoring.

The lecturers of the chair have published 1 monograph, 1 invention, 2 methodological manuals, 11 manuals and 271 articles.
