Chair of Armenian Language Named after G. B. Jahukyan, Correspondent Member of RA NAS, Academician

Chair of Armenian Language of Vanadzor State University was founded in 1969. During the 47 years of its existence the chair has been headed by:

  1. Hovhannes Adamyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), in 1969-1970, in 1974-1981
  2. Hakob Mkhitaryan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), in 1970-1974
  3. Yelena Vardanyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), in 1982-1986
  4. Tigran Avetisyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences,  professor), in 1987-2011
  5. Hasmik Harutyunyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), since 2011 up to the present time.

Prominent linguists such as Gevorg Jahukyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Sergey Abrahamyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Levon Khacheryan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Varag Arakelyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Edvard Mkrtchyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor) have worked in the chair in different years.

The chair carries out research activities in the following fields of Armenian Studies: Modern Armenian Language, Old Armenian (Grabar), Stylistics, Etymology of Names, Methods of Teaching Armenian Language, History of Armenian Language.

The chair has organized a number of international and republican conferences, including the republican conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Professor T. Avetisyan (“Collection of Scientific Materials Dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Professor T. Avetisyan”¸ Vanadzor-Yerevan, in 2001); republican conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Chair of Armenian Language of Vanadzor State University named after G. B. Jahukyan, correspondent member of RA NAS, academician (“Collection of Republican Conference Materials”, Yerevan-Vanadzor, in 2005), international conference dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Armenian Typography, republican conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Professor Gurgen Khachatryan (“Collection of Scientific Materials Dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Professor Gurgen Khachatryan”, Vanadzor, in 2013), and international conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of M. Abeghyan (“Collection of International Conference Materials Dedicated to the 150thAnniversary of Manuk Abeghyan”, Yerevan, in 2015).

The lecturers of the chair have participated in a great deal of international conferences and they are the authors of about 400 articles and numerous monographs, educational and methodological manuals: T. The generation change of the scientific and pedagogical staff has always been smooth in the chair, and in this process the main issue is to provide the chair with young, knowledgeable and skilled personnel. The 77% of the lecturers of the chair are graduates of VSU who all have academic degrees. Gurgen Khachatryan, Professor of the Chair of Armenian Language, Doctor of Philological Sciences, is also a graduate of Philological Faculty of Vanadzor State University. Hasmik Harutyunyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Chair of Armenian Language; Albert Poghosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, dean of the Philological Faculty; Aren  Santoyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, vice-rector for sciences; Anush Yedoyan, Candidate of Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, Nara Antonyan, headmaster of school N19; Candidate of Philological Sciences; Lilit H. Petrosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences; Lilit Petrosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Heghine Melkonyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor are also the graduates of Vanadzor State University.

Nowadays, two Doctors of Philological Sciences work in the chair: such as Gurgen Khachatryan and Tereza Shahverdyan.

Every year the chair organizes regional Olympiads from Armenian language, and pupils from different schools of the city and the region actively participate in it. The best of them are awarded with certificates and gifts. As a tradition the chair also celebrates the International Day of the Mother Tongue, in which the students of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree partake actively. The chair is zealous about the evaluation of the work of distinguished lecturers, the evidence of which are the organized events dedicated to their anniversaries, which are summarized with scientific conferences or academic seminars.
