Chair of Armenian Language Named after G. B. Jahukyan, Correspondent Member of RA NAS, Academician

VSU Chair of Armenian Language was founded in 1969. During the 47 years of its existence the chair was headed by:

  1. Hovhannes Adamyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), 1969-1970, 1974-1981)
  2. Hakob Mkhitaryan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), 1970-1974
  3. Yelena Vardanyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), 1982-1986
  4. Tigran Avetisyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences,  professor) 1987-2011
  5. Hasmik Hovhannisyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor), since 2011.

Prominent linguists Gevorg Jahukyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Sergei Abrahamyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Levon Khacheryan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Varag Arakelyan (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor), Edvard Mkrtchyan (Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor) worked in the chair.

The chair performs research activities in the following spheres of the Armenian language: Modern Armenian Language, Old Armenian (Grabar), Stylistics, Etymology of Names, Methods of Teaching the Armenian Language, History of the Armenian Language.

The chair has organized a number of international and republican conferences, including the republican conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Professor T. Avetisyan (“Collection of Scientific Materials Dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Professor T. Avetisyan”¸ Vanadzor-Yerevan, 2001); republican conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the establishment of VSU Chair of Armenian Language named after G. B. Jahukyan, correspondent member of RA NAS, academician (“Collection of the Republican Conference Materials”, Yerevan-Vanadzor, 2005), international conference dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Armenian typography, republican conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Professor Gurgen Khachaturian, (“Scientific Materials Dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of Professor Gurgen Khachatryan”, Vanadzor, 2013), and international conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of M. Aghabekyan (“Collection of the International Conference Materials Dedicated to the 150th Anniversary of Manuk Aghabekyan”, Yerevan, 2015).

The generation change of the pedagogical staff has always been smooth in the chair, and the issue of staffing the chair with young, knowledgeable and skilled personnel has always been highlighted in this process. The 77% of the lecturers of the chair are graduates of VSU who all have academic degrees. Gurgen Khachatryan, Professor of the Chair of Armenian Language, Doctor of Philological Sciences, rector of VSU, is also a graduate of VSU Philological Faculty. Hasmik Harutyunyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Chair of Armenian Language; Albert Poghosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, dean of the Philological Faculty; Aren  Santoyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, vice-rector on science; Anush Yedoyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, headmaster of school N19; Nara Antonyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences; Lilit H. Petrosyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences; Heghine Melkonyan, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor are also alumni of VSU.

Two Doctors of Philological Sciences work in the chair: Gurgen Khachatryan and Tereza Shahverdyan.

Every year the chair organizes Armenian language regional Olympiads, and pupils from various schools of the town and the region participate actively in it. The best of them are awarded with certificates and gifts. The chair traditionally celebrates also the International Day of the Mother Tongue, in which students of BA and MA take an active part. The chair is zealous about the evaluation of the work of distinguished lecturers, as evidenced by the events dedicated to their anniversaries, which are summarized in scientific conferences or seminars.
